Featuring Grammy Nominated Artist Jenni Lyn Gardner

MEET JENNI

meet della mae

I've known Jenni Lyn since she was knee high to a grasshopper. She is my best friend's little sister. so, you can imagine how much time I spent around her growing up. She was a feisty little thing that rebelled against conformity, and was always pickin' on some kind of stringed instrument. It's been no surprise to all of us who knew her when, that she's now a famous musician. Jenni plays the guitar, the mandolin, the banjo, and sings like a bird. Plus, she is currently a member of the all girl Bluegrass group "Della Mae."

1. Let's start this off with the important stuff. Style! How would you describe yours?

Yes! Let's jump right in!! I like to wear pieces that have a story.. for example, my favorite hat is a Stetson I found on the ground at a bluegrass festival. It's perfectly worn in and floppy, so much so that it has the name Old Floppy. I maybe could have gone to the store and found something new like it, but I would not love it as much, because it wouldn't have a story. The jewelry that I wear I have collected traveling or has been given to me by special people in my life. A lot of times I'll wear a good pair of jeans and boots with a vintage t-shirt or sweater I find at a thrift store.

4. You were on the road for 212 days last year. How do you pack for that?

It's true! I am on the road A LOT! I pack pieces that are versatile so I can pair them in different ways. One time on a 5 week trip, I packed only 1 pair of shoes: cowboy boots. Boots are king, because they look great on stage, yet are comfortable for travel! I even did some hiking in them.  I try to put together mini capsule wardrobes by packing one pair of nice jeans or pants, leggings and/or tights, maybe a dress, a couple of shirts, a vest, a scarf, one jacket that, again, is versatile (and compact), a pair of boots, maybe a pair of heals or wedges, one pair of running shoes, flip flops (I like to have flip flops even when it's cold out for walking around on hotel room floors), work out clothes, pajamas and jewelry that compliments the clothing that I pack. I try to bring a hat or two as well. A cute felt hat to wear on stage and at festivals, and a trucker hat are my go to's.

Just like Jenni Lyn, I personally live and breathe in my cowboy boots. Click the link below for details on how to purchase the most comfortable pair of shoes you'll ever own!!

5. How do you stay sane while touring and being in such close quarter for long periods of time?

Great question that has taken me years to perfect! I always carry my iPhone, ear buds, a good book, my favorite essential oils, my journal, a water bottle and a blanket. I can entertain myself for hours while staying relatively comfortable.

6. What's your favorite snack to take on tour?

LARA Bars: they are one of the few bars that have real ingredients like fruit and nuts with no artificial additives. They have saved my life more than once.

7. Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Brushing my teeth and maybe dabbing on a little perfume. I like to smell good on stage!

8. How do you reacclimatize yourself to Nashville/home after being on the road?

Cooking. I get right in to the kitchen. I usually go to the grocery store as soon as I get home to stock up on fresh ingredients and then cook a meal.  I love to clean out the refrigerator and cook enough to have left overs so when I look inside there are containers with yummy food there. It makes me feel grounded and calm, not to mention, having prepped food helps me stick with healthy eating habits.

9. In 2014 your band Della Mae was nominated for a Grammy. How did you feel the moment you heard about the news?

I screamed to the top of my lungs.. I'm pretty sure I caused the band hearing loss.

10. How did you feel that night when you didn't hear your named called?

I really wanted to win, but it wasn't devastating to loose to the legendary, Del McCoury Band. Being a grammy loser ain't so bad.

13. Della Mae has traveled extensively as Cultural Ambassadors on behalf of the U.S. State Department's American Music Abroad program. Can you elaborate on what all of this mean, and how your band was chosen for such an honor?

Yes, absolutely. We actually had some friends who did AMA before us and loved it. There is an audition process and we found out where they were sending us after we were selected to go. The first trip was to Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakstan, and Kyrgyzstan in 2012 and we've since visited Saudi Arabia, United Arab Immigrates, Brazil, The Marshall Islands, Guyana, and Bangladesh. In a nutshell, our mission is diplomacy through music, so we set out to make friends in the countries we visit by sharing a piece of American culture which for us is bluegrass music.  By doing this, we have the incredible fortune to share in their culture at the same time.

15. What place(s) are you most excited about traveling to during this years tour?

Vietnam. We are going on another State Department trip there and it looks gorgeous in photos. I plan on eating my weight in PHO.

The coolest!

19. What are three words that best describe you?

Happy, Fun loving, Silly

Instagram.. no twitter... actually, I like Facebook. ; )

In all seriousness, I'm trying to reach more followers and post more to my artist page on Facebook this year. Due to regulations, it has gotten more and more difficult to reach people and advertise up coming events with out paying to sponsor adds. I would really appreciate you heading over and pressing the "like" button on my artist Facebook page { JENNI LYN GARDNER MUSIC }. Tell your friends and family too!!

If you're curious in hearing the "Della Mae" sound, swing over to their website for a free download of "Boston town" {it's from their new album}. while you're there you should check the tour dates and see if they're coming to a town near you! also, Jenni occasionally rocks out solo and you can grab more details about any up coming performances on the jenni lyn gardner facebook page.

20 Question with Nicole Moore

Featuring Leigh Smoak of "Clean Eats 101"

MEET LEIGH

I first met Leigh Ann Lane, in the summer of 1996. She was working part-time at a resort boutique modeling clothing pool side to promote sells among hotel guests {I later got a job with with her}. She was pretty, loud, and full of personality.....I instantly thought she was the Cat's Pajamas. Through out the years, we would continue to bump into one another. First, at high football games {we both were on our school's dance team}, later while attending the same University {Go Cocks!}, and most recently she has been a Gypsy Boutique & Nicole Moore Collection Customer. A lot has changed over the years...she has gotten married, had babies, and helped create "CLean Eats 101;" a Health and Wellness website geared toward the everyday person.

1. I must kick this interview off with some serious business! Our crazy obsession over Halloween, or should I say...dress up in general . What did you and your family dress up as this past Halloween, and what is your all time favorite costume/dress up moment?

Since, Halloween is my favorite holiday...I pride myself on costume selection. This year we were all characters from the original "Star Wars" {I'm a sci-fi dweeb at heart}. My absolute favorite costume was Halloween 2013. I was two days away from my daughters due date, so I did what anyone with a once in a lifetime opportunity would do. I dressed up as a "beer bellied, bearded, southern gentleman.

My personal FAVORITE.....Prince!!!

2. Ok, now to this health and wellness. What is Clean Eats 101?

It is a website that is built on the idea that eating clean foods and exercise can be easy, understandable, efficient, and doable for anyone interested. In today's world, people are inundated with fad diets, unrealistic expectations of beauty, and intimidating workout programs...not to mention the expensive price tag for all of them. In my opinion, all of this starts people off feeling defected before they can even take the first steps in turning their life around. This is what got me motivated to help create "Clean Eats 101." I have dieted and tried everything in the book for most of my life. When I learned about clean eating and took some of the pressure off myself, I was literally awakened to a better me, and one that I could actually attain. This was one of the most powerful moments in my life, and I wanted everyone else to find that place too. It's a pretty incredible place!

3. Well, now I must ask {as I put another cheeto in my mouth}...What is your favorite forbidden food and how often do you allow yourself to indulge in it?

"Taco Bell," {Yup I said it!} I love Taco Bell's regular ole tacos, and nachos & cheese. I have some "TB" about once every 3 months. Oh and Totino's {frozen} pizza!!! I freaking love those damn little devils, but I limit myself to one every 5-6 months. Those are about as far away from clean as you can get, but we believe in 80/20 {because that's a realistic expectation}. Try and eat clean 80% of the time. Now for a more frequent indulgence...My favorite is peanut butter M&M's, and I keep a family size bag in the fridge. I have a few at night, at least 3 times a week. This is a perfect amount to satisfy my sweet tooth.

4. Does clean eating allow for cocktails? If so, whats your poison?

Yes, Yes, Yes!!! In fact we post a "TTICCGF" every Friday! "Thank God It's Clean Cocktail Friday" is a fan favorite and we have posted most of them on our website {My favorite is bourbon!}. I love some Blanton's on ice followed by red wine...of course {it's heart healthy all}.

BLANTON'S BOURBON

5. What did you have for breakfast?

Coffee, 2 eggs, and one egg white scrambled with spinach and feta cheese, strawberries, pineapple, and raspberries.

6. Both of your children have some what unique names, how did you decide on Kai {oldest, son} and Quinn {daughter}?

Kai was actually the name my husband, Mike had always wanted to name his son. He was a huge fan of the indoor professional soccer team, The Cleveland Force. There was a player named Kai Haaskivi, originally from Finland. Hasskivi played from The Finland National Team and The North American Soccer League. As far as Quinn...well, originally I planned on naming her "Bexley," calling her "Bex." When I was halfway through my pregnancy, the show "How I Met Your Mother" was still airing new episodes. Neil Patrick Harris' character; Barney Stinson, started dating a girl named Quinn {who happened to be a stripper, but we won't tell my Quinn that's where her name came from}.

7. If you could have a super power, what would it be?

"To be the Incredible Hulk, because he's awesome!"

8. Eliminating yours and mine of course {to only be fair}...What's your favorite website?

Buzzfeed, is a favorite of mine. Mainly because of their lists and their stars...like Matt Bellassi. I also love TheSkimm.com. I don't watch the nightly news, because it's so damn depressing. So, I go to The Skimm for my daily news. You can also request to receive daily emails and then you can catch up every morning.

9. Favorite fashion trend of all time?

Fanny Packs

Who knew the "Fanny Pack" would make another comeback...

11. Who is your fashion icon?

Jennifer Lawrence or Taylor Swift now, and Marilyn Monroe for the ove

Lenny Kravitz, and his comfortable quilt scarf {look it up, well worth the time}.

You're welcome!

You're welcome!

It's easy to see the similarities...

12. Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram?

Facebook, with Instagram as a close second. I'm far too wordy for Twitter.

13. Favorite 80's singer/band?

Prince

{no real surprise here! If you need a reminder...scroll back to the top and view Leigh paying homage in full Prince costume.}

14. Diamonds or Pearls?

Neither, a fabulous piece of bulky costume jewelry is my preference.

15. What are three words to describe you?

Entertaining, Ambitious, & Compassionate

16. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to play the lead role as you?

Amy Poehler, is my spirit animal!

17. What words of wisdom would you pass onto your childhood self?

Your feet are only going to get bigger, and being tall is actually pretty great. Oh, and Leigh...DON'T get your cartilage pierced. It's only going to get gross and you'll have to take it out after 3 months due to the pain.

18. What's you morning ritual like?

I wake up to Kai standing by my bed, saying his light is green on his alarm and he wants to watch PJ Masks. I get coffee, and tip toe because Quinn likes to sleep a few more minutes than her brother. I do morning Instagram and Facebook posts for Clean Eats as well as check email...on my phone of course. I then realize it's getting late and I still need to wake up Q. I frantically get them dressed, faces washed, teeth brushed, and out the door to drop off at school. I head home and eat some breakfast, because trust me...no one wants to talk to me if I haven't eaten breakfast {It's my favorite meal of the day}.

19. What's the most anti-establishment thing you've ever done?

On a girls trip to Greece a few years ago, the "Owling" trend was in. We decided to "Owl" on some of the ancient Greek ruins for pictures and apparently that's frowned upon...we were asked to leave.

One Owl....

20. Share a personal fact no one would ever guess about you.

I despise chick flicks, except for "The Sweetest Thing"...cause it's just awesome!

I'm not even remotely surprised by this selection...To be honest you could replace Cameron with Leigh and the movie wouldn't change much!
